There Are No Mistakes

"There are no mistakes in painting, just ideas."

This is how my first art lesson - post elementary school - began. My dear friend, Jennifer Moreman, who is, by the way, an extremely talented, soon to be full-time artist, invited me over to paint this week. I really didn't have high hopes for myself. My only saving grace would be that perhaps I inherited my dad's art gene. My dad is also an extremely talented artist, but has not painted in years.

I can now claim I am schooled in the Jennifer Moreman style of art, which is very free. So free, that it took me awhile to realize that if I made a stroke I didn't like, it didn't mean I had to start over, it just became part of the painting. I liked that! I felt liberated.

Jennifer also taught me to find the shapes in the image I am painting. For example, a head is not just round, there are a lot of other angles hidden that you find and pronounce.

Below is the result of my first lesson: a portrait of my wayward pup, Darcy. I'd say I have an excellent teacher, wouldn't you?

Thanks, Jenny! You are the best. Please check out Jennifer's artwork at jennifermoreman.com

What talent! You always had the art gene, you just needed to use it!
